Summer fruits galore! This Rosé is brimming with delicious strawberry, raspberry and poached rhubarb and a hint of yummy vanilla cream.
Early spring in Gisborne was characterised by cooler temperatures and higher rainfall than is typical at this time of year. This meant that the vines were in great shape to start the season with good reserves of moisture in the soils and a slightly late bud burst in the vines avoiding any hint of frosts. Mild conditions continued through spring and into early summer, meaning that flowering and fruit set also progressed at a leisurely pace. Although periodic rainfall continued up until the first week of January and kept grape growers on their toes, temperatures then warmed considerably, giving way to a fantastic dry ripening period, and moving the anticipated vintage dates back into the normal period. Harvest was characterised by very low rainfall during picking which allowed the fruit to ripen naturally with great flavours and natural acidity. 2019 was one of the great vintages in Gisborne.
V I N I F I C AT I O N
Every JT Rosé begins its life in the very early morning when the fruit is harvested in the cool temperatures of the first few hours of the day. At the winery Jules quickly crushes the grapes and then holds the freshly released juice in contact with the grape skins for a precise amount of time. This “time on skins” allows the bright pink colours and delightful aromas found only in the skins of the grapes to infuse into the juice, and is the key step to making a good Rosé! In 2019, Jules gently pressed, clarified and settled the juice. She then cool fermented the clarified juice with a yeast selected for aromatic enhancement. The wine was then protein and cold-stabilised. To finish the process Jules gave this wine a light filtration to enhance its brightness and sealed it with a screw cap to lock in its fresh fruit flavours.
Perfect for hot weather drinking, this wine is a great match for tasty summer salads – try watermelon, feta and mint, or a traditional Italian caprese salad. It is also fantastic served chilled with raw/lightly cooked shellfish or fish.
